Veda

Originated in ancient India and composed in Vedic Sanskrit, Vedas are collectively called a large body of religious beliefs or texts. These texts comprise the oldest portion of Sanskrit literature and scriptures of Hinduism. The term 'Veda' denotes 'knowledge' and is generally known as the collection of hymns or poems. There are mainly four types of Vedas: the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samaveda, and the Atharvaveda. Each Veda comprises four subdivisions namely the Samhitas (benedictions), the Aranyakas (text on rituals, and symbolic sacrifices), the Brahmanas (commentaries on rituals, and ceremonies), and the Upanishads (meditation and spiritual knowledge). These subdivisions are considered 'Shruthi'. A fifth category called the Upasanas (worship) has been added.
