Sama Veda - Part 03

Popularly known as the 'book of the song', 'Veda of chants' or 'yoga of song', Sama Veda is considered one of the shortest of all four Vedic collections. Out of 1549 verses, 75 of them have been adapted from the Rig Veda. In short, Sama Veda is a collection of words of Rig Veda that are put to music. Thus, it is also termed as 'storehouse of melodious chants'. It inculcates the music, mantra, Chanda, linguistics as well as the reflection of rishis about the world. Sama Veda incorporates namely 2 components Chandogya and Kena Upanishad. When compared to Rig Veda, Sama Veda has fewer verses and large text. Kauthuma, Raṇayaniya and Jaimaniya are the 3 recensions or branches of the text. Samaveda is split into two parts as Part-I that carries melodies called Gana & Part-II comprises three verses book called Archika. Samaveda Samhita is a musical score sheet that must be heard. The main theme of Sama Veda is worship and devotion.
