There is substantial debate about whether non-human animals have rights and what animal rights include. The repercussions of believing that animals have rights are significantly less contentious. Animal rights tell us that there are some things that are morally wrong to do to animals that are wrong as a matter of principle. Human beings must not do those things, no matter how great the cost to humanity. Even if done in a humane manner, human beings must not do such things. The 3Rs principles are universally accepted and provide a framework for making ethical decisions about the use of animals in research and education.
