Gyanpeeth Award

The first Jnanapeeth Award was received by the Malayalam writer G Sankara Kurup for his literary work “Odakkuzhal” in the year 1950. This award was first awarded in the year 1965. And it has a total number of awardees of 62, with the recent recipient Damodar Mauzo in Konkani language for his work Karmelin. Jnanapeeth award is considered as the highest literary award of India. It also has a reward of rupees eleven lakh in Indian currency. This award is given for the Indian language writers for their outstanding literary contribution for the nation. It is only applicable to the works published in a language which is included in the twenty-two scheduled languages in the constitution.
