Alavarivukal

An Alavarivukal is a kitchen utensil that is primarily used to measure the volume of liquid or bulk solid cooking ingredients such as flour and sugar, particularly for volumes ranging from about 50 mL and up. Alavarivukal are also used in the laundry to measure washing powder, liquid detergents, and bleach. The utensil will typically have a scale marked in cups and fractions of a cup, as well as fluid measure and weight of a variety of dry foodstuffs. Alavarivukal are available in plastic, glass, and metal. Transparent (or translucent) cups can be read using an external scale, whereas metal cups can only be read using a dipstick or scale marked on the inside. Alavarivukal typically range in capacity from 250 mL to 1000 mL, though larger sizes are available for commercial use. They typically have scale markings at various heights, the substance to be measured is added to the cup until it reaches the desired level.
