According to the Malayalam calendar, Thiruvathira is Lord Shiva's nakshatra or "star." After her long penance, Goddess Parvathi is said to have finally met Lord Shiva on this day, and Lord Shiva took her as a saha-dharma chaarini (equal partner). In the form of Ardhanarishvara, both Parvathi and Shiva present this ideal to followers (half male, half female form). The celebration is also said to commemorate the death of Kamadeva, the Hindu god of sensual desire. Thiruvathira, along with the two major festivals of Onam and Vishu, is an important traditional celebration in Kerala.
മലയാളം കലണ്ടർ അനുസരിച്ച്, തിരുവാതിര ശിവന്റെ നക്ഷത്രം അല്ലെങ്കിൽ "നക്ഷത്രം" ആണ്. അവളുടെ നീണ്ട തപസ്സിനു ശേഷം, പാർവതി ദേവി ഒടുവിൽ ഈ ദിവസം ശിവനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടിയതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു, കൂടാതെ ശിവൻ അവളെ ഒരു സഹ-ധർമ്മ ചാരിണിയായി (തുല്യ പങ്കാളിയായി) സ്വീകരിച്ചു. അർദ്ധനാരീശ്വരന്റെ രൂപത്തിൽ, പാർവതിയും ശിവനും ഈ ആദർശം അനുയായികൾക്ക് അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു (പകുതി പുരുഷൻ, പകുതി സ്ത്രീ രൂപം). ഇന്ദ്രിയാസക്തിയുടെ ഹിന്ദു ദൈവമായ കാമദേവന്റെ മരണത്തെ അനുസ്മരിക്കുന്നതായും ഈ ആഘോഷം പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. തിരുവാതിര, ഓണം, വിഷു എന്നീ രണ്ട് പ്രധാന ആഘോഷങ്ങൾക്കൊപ്പം കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന പരമ്പരാഗത ആഘോഷമാണ്.
