Images | English

World Senior Citizens' Day is observed every year on August 21 to recognise the contributions of elders to society and its people. The day is dedicated to raising awareness about issues such as elder abuse and ageing that affect the elderly. On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly declared the first World Senior Citizens' Day. However, the first commemoration of this day took place on October 1, 1991. Among the many presidents who have come and gone, Ronald Reagan, the former president of the United States of America (USA), formally established World Senior Citizens' Day after signing a proclamation on August 19, 1988.
