Who Vs Whom - 01

Images | English

Who is both straightforward and complex. It's straightforward because it's simply the objective case of who, which means it's the form of who that appears in the object position in a sentence. Where things get complicated is determining what exactly constitutes the object position in a sentence. A noun or noun equivalent (such as a pronoun, gerund, or clause) that receives the action of a verb or completes the meaning of a preposition is referred to as an object in grammatical terms. Who is a pronoun, which means it's used instead of a noun or noun phrase to refer to something that's already been mentioned or doesn't need to be named. In places where that word would receive the verb's action or complete the meaning of a preposition, whom replaces who.
