Once upon a time, when Maharaja Marthanda Varma of Travancore returned from a visit to the Vaikom temple, he met the Ramapurathuvaiyars. During this voyage in a decorated watercraft, the Warrior King sang some of the hymns he had written. Warrier sang the lines in the circle. Researchers believe that the song "Vanchipattu" came from the fact that it was sung on a boat to the tune of the oarsmen.

''വഞ്ചിപ്പാട്ട്" എന്ന ഗാനം തുഴക്കാരുടെ താളത്തിനൊത്ത് തോണിയിലിരുന്ന് പാടിയതിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഉണ്ടായതെന്ന് ഗവേഷകർ കരുതുന്നു.
