On the day of Krishna Ashtami, Vaikathashtami is observed. Years ago, a saint named Vyaghrapada prayed to God Siva for years, and after many years, God Siva and his wife Parvathy Devi came in front of him. On the day of Krishna Ashtami, it is said that god Siva appeared in front of him. As a remembrance of this, Vaikathashtami is observed. The festival lasts for a total of 12 days. Vaikathashtami is the 12th day of the Hindu calendar. The Vaikom Mahadeva temple is one of the rare temples that both Shaivaites and Vaishnavaites adore. Vaikkathappan is the name given to Vaikom's Shiva.
കൃഷ്ണാഷ്ടമി നാളിൽ വൈക്കത്തഷ്ടമി ആചരിക്കുന്നു. വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ്, വ്യാഘ്രപാദൻ എന്ന സന്യാസി വർഷങ്ങളോളം ശിവനോട് പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചു, വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം ശിവനും ഭാര്യ പാർവതി ദേവിയും അവന്റെ മുന്നിൽ വന്നു. കൃഷ്ണാഷ്ടമി ദിനത്തിൽ ശിവൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുന്നിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇതിന്റെ സ്മരണയായാണ് വൈക്കത്തഷ്ടമി ആചരിക്കുന്നത്. ആകെ 12 ദിവസമാണ് ഉത്സവം. ഹൈന്ദവ കലണ്ടറിലെ 12-ാം ദിവസമാണ് വൈക്കത്തഷ്ടമി. ശൈവരും വൈഷ്ണവരും ഒരുപോലെ ആരാധിക്കുന്ന അപൂർവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് വൈക്കം മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം. വൈക്കത്തെ ശിവന് നൽകിയ പേരാണ് വൈക്കത്തപ്പൻ.
