"Traditional Wisdom – Musical Instruments Strings, woodwind, percussion, and brass are the most common type of musical instruments traditionally used in Kerala. Many varieties of these instruments have been much sought after since ancient times. Be it for religious rites, dance, or plays, instrumental music has had an indispensable role in Keralas cultural heritage. Kerala is the land of rhythm and beats so much so that 18 types of musical instruments of ancient times are still very much in vogue such as the conch, chengala, idakka, veekan chenda, maram, thimila, chenda, shuddha maddalam, thoppi maddalam, kuzhal, komb, mizhav, ilathalam, kuzhithalam, etc."
"കൊട്ടറിവുകൾ വാദ്യങ്ങൾ തന്ത്രി വാദ്യങ്ങൾ, കാറ്റുവാദ്യങ്ങൾ(സുഷിരവാദ്യങ്ങൾ), തോലുവാദ്യങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ തരംതിരിക്കാം . ഇവയിൽ നിരവധിവാദ്യങ്ങൾ ഇന്ന് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വരുന്നുണ്ട്. താളവാദ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് കേരളത്തിൽ പ്രത്യേക സ്ഥാനം കാണുണ്ട്. ദേവകാര്യങ്ങൾക്ക്, നാടകം, നൃത്തനാടകങ്ങൾ മുതലായവക്ക് എന്തിനും കേരളത്തിൽ ഒരു കൊട്ട് നിർബന്ധമാണ്. താളത്തിന്റെയും നാദത്തിന്റെയും നാടാണ് കേരളം. കേരളത്തിൽ പ്രചാരത്തിലിരുന്ന പതിനെട്ടു വാദ്യോപകരണങ്ങളെ ഇന്നും അവ ഏറെക്കുറെ, പ്രദേശികഭേദത്തോടെയാണെങ്കിലും കണ്ടെത്താവുന്നതാണ്. ശംഖ്, ചേങ്ങല, ഇടയ്ക്ക, വീക്കൻ ചെണ്ട, മരം, തിമില, ചെണ്ട, ശുദ്ധമദ്ദളം, തൊപ്പിമദ്ദളം, കുഴൽ, കൊമ്പ്, മിഴാവ്, ഇലത്താളം, കുഴിതാളം മുതലായവ കേരളത്തിലെ പ്രധാന വാദ്യങ്ങൾ ആണ്."
