Have you seen a family of multitasking, multiuser computer operating systems ? It is UNIX. Unix is a computer operating system capable of managing numerous users' activities at the same time. Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie of AT&T Bell Labs began developing Unix about 1969. Unix systems are known for its modular architecture, which is frequently referred to as the "Unix philosophy." The operating system, according to this concept, should provide a set of basic tools, each of which performs a specific, well-defined purpose. The major means of communication are an uniform filesystem (the Unix filesystem) and an inter-process communication mechanism known as "pipes," with a shell scripting and command language (the Unix shell) used to combine the tools to execute sophisticated processes. Unix distinguishes itself from its predecessors as the first portable operating system: almost the entire operating system is written in the C programming language, which allows Unix to operate on numerous platforms.
