Udayamperoor A diocesan synod, or council, held in Udayamperoor (known as Diamper in non-vernacular literature) in 1599 created rules and regulations for the ancient Saint Thomas Christians (also known as Mar Thoma). The Synod of Diamper was a council that formally joined the Roman Catholic Church with the ancient Thomas Christians of the Malabar Coast in southwestern India. Aleixo de Meneses, archbishop of Goa, convened it in 1599. Many historians today contend that the synod was invalid because it was called without authorization, because Menezes' power as Latin Primate of the East did not extend beyond the Latin sees into the Oriental churches.
