Types of DNA

Presentations | English

Are you aware of the types of DNA? DNA is the chemical name for the molecule that carries genetic instructions in all living things. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the central information storage system of most animals and plants, and even some viruses. DNA is organized structurally into chromosomes and then wound around nucleosomes part of those chromosomes. There are two types of DNA in the cell – autosomal DNA and mitochondrial DNA. An autosome is any of the numbered chromosomes, as opposed to the sex chromosomes. Autosomal DNA is a term used in genetic genealogy to describe DNA that is inherited from the autosomal chromosomes. Mitochondrial DNA is the DNA located in mitochondria, cellular organelles within eukaryotic cells that convert chemical energy from food into a form that cells can use, such as adenosine triphosphate. Three major forms of DNA are double-stranded and connected by interactions between complementary base pairs. They are termed A-form, B-form, and Z-form DNA.
