Types of Computer Systems

Why is a computer called a Computer System? A computer along with additional hardware and software together is called a computer system. A computer system primarily comprises a central processing unit (CPU), memory, input/output devices, and storage devices, that work together to perform steps called for in the program being executed. All these components function together as a single unit to deliver the desired output. There are different types of computer systems: Personal computer: It is a single-user computer system having a moderately powerful microprocessor, Workstation: It is also a single user computer system, similar to a personal computer, however, has a more powerful microprocessor, Minicomputer: It is a multi-user computer system, capable of supporting hundreds of users simultaneously, Mainframe: It is a multi-user computer system, capable of supporting hundreds of users simultaneously. Software technology is different from minicomputers, and Supercomputers: It is an extremely fast computer, which can execute hundreds of millions of instructions per second. Based on data handling capabilities a computer system can be divided into Analog, Digital, and Hybrid.
