We've all been in that situation. Something bad happens, and before you know it, someone is telling you, "Don't cry over spilled milk." While it is a pleasant sentiment, why do we say it and what does it imply? "Don't cry over spilled milk," or "it's no use crying over spilled milk," is a proverb that means there's no point in being upset about something that has already happened and cannot be changed. Some claim that the phrase "don't cry over spilled milk" first appeared in an 1888 book about a man who had just been robbed. "It was no use, however, crying over spilt milk," he responded, despite his predicament.
