Thumbithullal is a traditional Kerala pastime ritual held in association with the festival of Onam. It is a ritualistic dance mimicking the rhythmic movement of a dragon fly. This pleasure ritual involves only women. On this occasion, women dress in their favourite Onam attire called the Onakodi. Held on the Thiruvathira day of the festival month, a participant stands at the centre of the gathering holding a bouquet of flowers. Women around her sing ritualistic songs, shout and call out persuading the woman to dance. Women sing ritualistic songs while rhythmically moving around her. Gradually, as the pace of the song increases, the dancers adopt the rhythmic movement of a dragonfly.
ഒരു കേരളീയ വിനോദമാണ് തുമ്പിതുള്ളൽ. ഓണത്തിനോടനുബന്ധിച്ചാണ് ഇത് നടത്തുന്നത്. അതിനാൽ പെൺകുട്ടികൾ നടത്തുന്ന ഈ വിനോദത്തിൽ, ഓണക്കോടി ആയിരിയ്ക്കും പ്രധാന വേഷം. തിരുവാതിരയോടനുബന്ധിച്ചും ഇത് നടത്തിവരുന്നു.കളത്തിന്റെ നടുക്ക്‌ ഒരു പെൺ‌കുട്ടി പൂക്കുലയും പിടിച്ചു നിൽ‌ക്കും. ചുറ്റും നിൽ‌ക്കുന്നവർ പാട്ടുപാടുകയും ആർ‌പ്പും കുരവയുമായി തുമ്പിയെ തുള്ളിക്കാൻ‌ശ്രമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. തുമ്പിതുള്ളലിലെ ഗാനങ്ങൾ ഓരോന്നായി ആലപിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് മദ്ധ്യത്തിലായിരിയ്ക്കുന്ന പെൺകുട്ടിയെ വലം‌വെയ്ക്കുന്നു. ഗാനത്തിന്റെ വേഗത വർദ്ധിയ്ക്കുന്നതിനനുസരിച്ച് കുട്ടി തുമ്പിയെപ്പോലെ തുള്ളിത്തുടങ്ങുന്നു.
