Theory of Nine Rasas in Indian Aesthetics

Presentations | English

"‘Rasa’ as a term in the Indian Aesthetics refers to the ‘taste’ or ‘essence’ of a work of art or artform. It successfully denotes the concept of Indian art having a certain special aesthetic flavour of any literary or artistic form of work that evokes a beautifully peculiar emotion and feeling, within the audience or receiver, towards the said art form; be it visual, literal or any musical form of art. Developed by the philosopher Abhinavagupta several many years ago. Indian aesthetics is a unique point of view, portrayed in the most philosophical ideology. The concept of the Nine Rasas or the ‘Navarasa’ is fundamental to various forms of Indian art such as music, cinema and theatre. Though not mentioned much, the theory of rasas was attributed to Bharata, the sage. Know more about the world of Indian Aesthetics and rasas through the presentation.
