Weather describes the state of the atmosphere, such as how hot or cold it is, how wet or dry it is, how calm or stormy it is, and how clear or cloudy it is. The term "weather" refers to day-to-day temperature and precipitation activity, whereas "climate" refers to the averaging of atmospheric conditions over longer time periods. With some zonal variation, India has four main seasons: cold weather, hot weather, the advancing monsoon, and the retreating monsoon. In north India, the cold weather season begins in mid-November and lasts until February. In India, the hot weather season lasts from March to May. The advancing monsoon season begins in June and lasts until September. The retreating monsoon begins in October and lasts until mid-December.
