The Vedic Period or the Vedic Age refers to that time period when the Vedic Sanskrit texts were composed in India. The Vedas are also the chief source of information about this era. The four Vedas are: Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva. The society that emerged during that time is known as the Vedic Period, or the Vedic Age Civilization. It flourished between 1500 BC and 500 BC on Indian-Gangetic plains. It led to the foundation of Hinduism as well as Indian culture. The Vedic Age started with the coming of the Aryans or Indo-Aryans. Vedic civilization can be divided into- early Vedic period and later Vedic period. The word ‘Veda’ originated from the root ‘vid’ which means spiritual knowledge or subject of knowledge or means of acquiring knowledge. Rig Veda was composed during the Early Vedic Age. The other three were written in the Later Vedic Age. Agriculture was the chief occupation. Industrial work like metalwork, pottery and carpentry work also was there. There was foreign trade with far off regions like Babylon and Sumeria.
