The saree, as the world's longest unstitched garment, is a fitting symbol for India, the world's largest democracy. The uninitiated may mistake it for the quintessential Churchillian bundle of riddle, mystery, and enigma, with nearly six metres of cloth, variously printed and embroidered, and endless accoutrements. There was also the sareegram. On Instagram, I'm wearing a saree. Ironic as it may sound, a saree without borders. Saree is worn in India's states and other countries around the world. The only boundaries it was aware of were those that it imposed on itself. Sarees are worn by women of all castes, classes, and genders. Even when they were apart, there was a ritual that reinforced their bond.
