Lepakshi, a small town in the Ananthapur District of Andhra Pradesh is today famous the world over. Also referred to as the Lepakshi Group of Monuments, it has the distinction of offering several breathtaking stone structures and monolithic carvings. Famous among these is the monolithic statue of Nandi. It is said that the place traces its name to as far back as the times of the Ramayana, this beign the very place where the bird (pakshi) Jatayu was slain by Ravana.
