Oral transmission is another source of information on various ishals. Oppana is a prominent form of social particularly in malabar. The word "oppana" is thought to have come from the arabic word "affna." Oppana was created to commemorate the making of muslim brides. On a wedding day, oppana is usually presented by a group of roughly fifteen women, including musicians. The bride sits amidst the circle of dancers, clothed in finery and decorated with gold jewellery on her palms and feet, as well as an intricately woven pattern of mylanchi (henna) on her palms and feet. She is the main observer, seated on a chair in the midst of the singing and dancing. They clap their hands rhythmically and walk around while singing, with the bride taking tiny steps. The songs are started by two or three girls, then the rest join in the chorus.
