During the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth, Swami Vivekananda's inspiring personality was well known in both India and America. The unnamed Indian monk rose to prominence during the Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893, where he represented Hinduism. People who saw or heard Vivekananda even once revere his memory even after more than a half-century has passed. The Swami's mission was national as well as international. He strived to promote peace and universal fraternity on the spiritual foundation of the Vedantic Oneness of existence, as a lover of humanity. Swami Vivekananda described himself as a "condensed India" at one point. His life and teachings are invaluable to the West in comprehending the Asian mind. Vivekananda, a mystic of the greatest degree, had a direct and intuitive experience of Reality. He drew his ideas from that constant wellspring of wisdom and frequently expressed them in the soul stirring language of poetry.
