It is a classical Tamil poetic work and historically the last of the Eight Anthologies within the Sangam literature. it's a group of four hundred heroic poems regarding kings, wars and public life, of that 2 square measure lost and some have survived into the fashionable age in fragments. The collected poems were composed by 157 poets, of that fourteen square measure anonymous and a minimum of ten were poet. This collection has been diversely dated between first century BCE and fifth century Ce, with Kamil Zvelebil – a Tamil literature scholar, qualitative analysis preponderantly all of the poems of Purananuru someday between ordinal and fifth century Ce. whereas few poems square measure dated to the amount of first century BCE. The Purananuru collection is numerous. Of its four hundred poems, 138 praise forty three kings – eighteen from the Chera phratry (present day Kerala), thirteen Chola phratry kings, and twelve Early Pandya phratry kings. Another 141 poems praise forty eight chieftains. These panegyric poems recite their heroic deeds, also as another 109 poems that recount deeds of anonymous heroes, possible of older Tamil oral tradition.
