Stereochemistry

Presentations | English

Did you know that the chemistry of space is also known as Stereochemistry? The term Stereochemistry originated in 1878 by Viktor Meyer (1848–97) for the study of stereo-isomers. The branch of chemistry which deals with the three-dimensional structure of molecules and their effect on physical and chemical properties is known as stereochemistry. Stereochemistry also deals with the manipulation of the arrangement of these atoms. It is commonly referred to as 3-D chemistry since it focuses on stereo-isomers and their asymmetric synthesis. Stereo-isomers are chemical compounds with the same chemical formula but a different spatial arrangement in three dimensions. Stereochemistry is of critical importance to drug action because the shape of a drug molecule is an important factor in determining how it interacts with the various biological molecules (enzymes, receptors, etc.) that it encounters in the body. An important part of stereochemistry is the study of chiral molecules.
