Self-esteem refers to how you feel about yourself or your opinion of yourself. Everyone has times when they are depressed or have trouble believing in themselves. However, if this continues for an extended period of time, it can lead to problems, such as mental health issues like depression or anxiety. Some of the signs and symptoms of low self-esteem can also be indicators of these issues. Many of us understand the importance of improving our self-esteem. When we have higher self-esteem, we not only feel better about ourselves, but we are also more resilient. According to brain scan studies, when our self-esteem is high, we are more likely to perceive common emotional wounds like rejection and failure as less painful and recover faster. When our self-esteem is higher, we are less prone to anxiety; when we are stressed, we release less cortisol into our bloodstream, and it is less likely to stay in our system. So it is highly important that we develop a more positive outlook to life and build a high self esteem.
