Let's find out about Stage 4. In this stage, we find, Identity and Power: Three to Six Years. This fourth stage is for discovering who we are. We explore many aspects of our identity and internal organization—gender, style, roles, clothes, props, social relationships, and power. We test the consequences of our behavior and our capacity and ability to influence others. Developmental Tasks of the Child in this stage includes: asserting an identity separate from others, acquiring information about the world, self, body, and sex role, learning that behaviors have consequences, discover our effect on others and our place in groups; to learn socially appropriate behavior, to exert power to affect our relationships; to learn the extent of our power and separate fantasy from reality. This is the identity stage, that brings up questions and issues related to power and gender: potency and impotency, magic, creating or destroying, hurting, and healing.
