A programming language is a formal language comprising a set of strings that produce various kinds of machine code output. SQL stands for Structured Query Language, which is a programming language used to communicate with relational databases. It is a standardized programming language that's used to manage relational databases and perform various operations on the data in them. Initially created in the 1970s, SQL is regularly used not only by database administrators, but also by developers writing data integration scripts and data analysts looking to set up and run analytical queries. SQL offers two main advantages over older read–write APIs such as ISAM or VSAM. Firstly, it introduced the concept of accessing many records with one single command. Secondly, it eliminates the need to specify how to reach a record, e.g. with or without an index. The presentation gives in-depth knowledge on the topic.
