Space and Earth

Our heavenly neighborhood is wonderful, but what about our own planet? The third planet from the sun is Earth, our home. While researchers continue to look for signs of life elsewhere in the cosmos, Earth remains the only place where we've ever found living creatures. Earth, the third planet from the sun, is the only place in the known cosmos where life has been verified. Earth is the fifth biggest planet in our solar system, with a radius of 3,959 miles, and the only one known to contain liquid water on its surface. Earth is the planet we have the best chance to study in depth, and it can help us understand how other rocky worlds, even those orbiting distant stars, behave. As a result, scientists are increasingly using space to study Earth. NASA alone has hundreds of missions dedicated to unravelling the secrets of our planet. Most scientists agree that space begins when orbital dynamic forces overtake aerodynamic forces, or when the atmosphere alone is no longer sufficient to maintain a flying vehicle at suborbital speeds.
