"Found in the year 1985, The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation or the SAARC, is an intergovernmental organization and a union of states in South Asia. Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bhutan and Nepal are the 8 countries present in the intergovernmental organization. The organisation also holds a total of nine observer states, namely, Myanmar, European Union, Australia, China, Japan, Mauritius, Iran, the United States and South Korea. The union effectively promotes regional integration and economic development. The first ever SAARC meeting was carried out at Dhaka on the 7th and 8th of December, in 1985. It was hosted by the President of Bangladesh, Hussain Ershad, while all the other presidents of the respective countries joined him."
