Soil Compaction

Presentations | English

Soil compaction occurs when soil particles are pressed together, reducing pore space between them. Heavily compacted soils contain few large pores, less total pore volume and, consequently, a greater density. A compacted soil has a reduced rate of both water infiltration and drainage. This happens because large pores more effectively move water downward through the soil than smaller pores. Good soil structure is important for the movement of water, gases and roots, which are all critical for a healthy soil. But compacted soils lack good soil structure as the air spaces that are essential in the movement of water, gases and plant roots are compressed. Soil compaction can have an impact over a range of soils and climatic zones and can affect different industries. The presentation will give you better insight on the topic.
