“The French Revolution” is the 1 st chapter in the NCERT social science textbook named “India and the Contemporary World – 1” of standard IX. Louis XVI ascended the throne of France in 1774. The financial condition of France was very bad. To overcome the situation, the taxes were to be increased. On 14 July 1789, the king had commanded his troops to move into the city of Paris. Rumors spread that the army would open fire upon the citizens. People stormed the fortress-prison, the Bastille, to find hoarded ammunition. The fortress was demolished and its stone fragments were sold in the markets. It was the beginning of achain of events that ultimately led to the execution of the king in France.
