"Social media refers to technological interfaces where audiences in certain communities or networks, with the help of the internet, can share ideas, interact with large audiences, create and connect. Profiles represent their users and are the basis of existence on social media platforms. People can use this to connect with like-minded individuals, to educate themselves, promote their brands and businesses; also, as a platform of creative expression. However, social media can prove to be detrimental as it can lead to depression, lower self-esteem in individuals who base their success on their approval rating from their audiences; this can in turn lead to social isolation and sleep deprivation. There are also risks of cyberbullying, cyberstalking, fraud and phishing."
