Silapadhikaram is an ancient semi-legendary epic which is believed to be setup in the sea port areas of the early Chola dynasty. It was included in Sangam literature and has an important religious significance over Hinduism and Jainism religions. Sangam literature is one of the ancient literatures of South India, to be specific, of Tamil Nadu. The story of Silapadhikaram revolves around a tragic love story between Kannaki and Kovalan. It has the essence of love, hurt, tragedy, anger, rejection, happiness and good, like every other important literary works. Unlike the other epics which showed the war and vengeance between kings or lands, which we have important significance in our literary history, Silapadhikaram is a normal story based on the lives of normal couple. This famous work is also included as one among the five great epics of Tamil literature and is still used in folklore traditional plays.
