The monarch of the Kingdom of Cochin was Rama Varma Kunhjippilla Thampuran (1751–1805), also known as Sakthan Thampuran (Sakthan meaning mighty). Scholars such as Kallenkara Pisharody guided him during his early studies. As his name suggests, Sakthan Thampuran was the most powerful of the Kochi Maharajas. Kochi, the modern southern Indian metropolis, was once part of the Kochi princely kingdom. He lived in Thrissur's Vadakkechira Palace. Because of its many traditional festivals and historic temples, the city of Thrissur is known as Kerala's Cultural Capital. Sakthan Thampuran is widely regarded as Thrissur's architect. He was the founder of the Thrissur Pooram celebration.
ശക്തൻ തമ്പുരാൻ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന രാമവർമ്മ കുഞ്ഞിപ്പിള്ള തമ്പുരാൻ (1751-1805) ആയിരുന്നു കൊച്ചി രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ രാജാവ്. കല്ലേങ്കര പിഷാരടിയെപ്പോലുള്ള പണ്ഡിതർ ആദ്യകാല പഠനകാലത്ത് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ നയിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പേര് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ, കൊച്ചി മഹാരാജാക്കന്മാരിൽ ഏറ്റവും ശക്തനായിരുന്നു ശക്തൻ തമ്പുരാൻ. ആധുനിക ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യൻ മഹാനഗരമായ കൊച്ചി ഒരുകാലത്ത് കൊച്ചി നാട്ടുരാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു. തൃശൂർ വടക്കേച്ചിറ കൊട്ടാരത്തിലായിരുന്നു താമസം. നിരവധി പരമ്പരാഗത ഉത്സവങ്ങളും ചരിത്രപരമായ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും ഉള്ളതിനാൽ, തൃശൂർ നഗരം കേരളത്തിന്റെ സാംസ്കാരിക തലസ്ഥാനം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ശക്തൻ തമ്പുരാൻ തൃശ്ശൂരിന്റെ വാസ്തുശില്പിയായി പരക്കെ കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. തൃശൂർ പൂരം ആഘോഷത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാപകൻ.
