The Battle of Badr was the first large-scale conflict between Muslims and Qurayshites in Mecca. The muslims attacked the Meccans from the north. The fight began with duels between both sides' warriors, after which the Meccans stormed against the muslims under the cover of arrows. The Muslims resisted the Meccan charge by murdering numerous major Quraishi leaders, notably Abu Jahl and Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and breaking the Meccan lines.The victory at Badr was regarded as miraculous since it was such a watershed moment for the fledgling Muslim community. It not only reaffirmed the heavenly sanction of the new religion of Islam to the ummah but it also confirmed the ummah's vigour in confronting the Quraysh's dominion. With the exception of a setback in the Battle of Uud , the ummah's triumphs forced the Quraysh to allow Muhammad's adherents to worship at al-Masjid al-Haram. The Quraysh surrendered Mecca to Muhammad and became Muslims following years of warfare. Those who fought at Badr under Muhammad became known as badriyyun and made up one group of the Companions of the Prophet.
