Role of UN in Disaster Management

Presentations | English

We live in a world where natural disasters are unfortunately common occurrences, so it is extremely important to always be prepared for them. Each UN organization or agency is responsible for providing advice and assistance to the government of a disaster-prone or disaster-affected country. Recognizing the need to contribute to disaster response and recovery efforts, the United Nations established in 1971 its own mechanism to provide international assistance to governments when such governments elevate a request for humanitarian assistance. All response activities within the United Nations are coordinated by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The United Nations Disaster Management Team (UNDMT) under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator works with diverse stakeholders to integrate the objectives of Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation into broader development plans and Programmes, including those related to agriculture and natural resources, urban and rural habitats, infrastructure and service delivery.
