Renaissance and the silver poets

Presentations | English

Following the Middle Ages, Europe experienced a fervent period of cultural, artistic, political, and economic "rebirth" known as the Renaissance. The Renaissance, which lasted from the 14th to the 17th centuries, promoted the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature, and art. The silver poets were a group of English writers who lived in the sixteenth century and wrote short poems, ballads, carols, elegies, epitaphs, lyrics, and sonnets. They included Sir Thomas Wyatt, Henry Howard (Earl of Surrey), Sir Philip Sidney, Sir Walter Raleigh, and John Davies. During the beginning of the English Renaissance to the end of the Elizabethan Age, their writings focused on the theme of love. The silver poets are known for breaking with previous traditions and experimenting with new and different ways of talking about love.
