Production of Transgenic Plants

Presentations | English

Over the past decade, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been in the news for their potential benefits and harms to society. Before human cloning became an issue, the emergence of transgenic plants was the hot topic in biotechnology. Transgenic plants are plants that have had their genomes modified through genetic engineering techniques either by the addition of a foreign gene or removal of a certain detrimental gene. These engineered crops seek to provide better flavour, disease resistance, and increased nutritional value just like traditional breeding methods. Inserting beneficial genes from a completely different species or even kingdom into a target plant, yields transgenic plants with multiple traits. To develop a transgenic plant, parameters such as vector constructions, transformation methods, transgene integration, and inheritance of transgene need to be carefully considered to ensure the success of the transformation event.
