Most of us are familiar with the term PCR test as a result of the Covid epidemic. A polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, test is used to assess whether or not a person has been exposed to the Covid virus. It can amplify tiny pieces of DNA or genes into millions of copies of DNA. Kary Mullis, a well-known American biochemist, invented the PCR in 1983. In 1993, he was given the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work. PCR tests are used for detecting the presence or absence of a gene to identify pathogens during infection, and generating forensic DNA profiles from small DNA samples.
