Process of converting light energy into chemical energy by green plants and certain organisms. In green plants, light from sun is used to convert water, carbon dioxide and minerals into oxygen and energy rich compounds. Existence of life on Earth would be impossible if photosynthesis is ceased. Two types of photosynthetic process are oxygenic and anoxygenic, oxygenic is common seen in plants, algae and cyanobacteria. The function of oxygenic is to take in carbon dioxide produced by all organisms and give out oxygen to the atmosphere. Using carbon dioxide with water and light energy, carbohydrate and oxygen is formed. Cellular components essential for the process are pigments, which are molecules provide color to plants. They are responsible for trapping sunlight as well. Pigments can be chlorophyll, carotenoids or phycobilins. Plastids are storehouse of pigments. In future, the photosynthetic organisms are capable to generate clean burning fuels like hydrogen or methane. Advancements is happening in artificial photosynthesis. More information about the topic can be understood from the PowerPoint presentation.
