Performance appraisal is the process of evaluating employee performance. These are reviews of employee performance over time, so appraisal is just one piece of performance management. Performance management is about actually helping an employee to develop and increase his performance and productivity. Performance appraisal evaluates the actual performance of the employee, but it does not focus on the employee's performance productivity. Appraisal is all about planning and expectation setting, monitoring, development and improvement, periodic rating, rewards and compensation etc. The main objective of the performance appraisal system is to exercise control over the activities of the employees through disciplinary actions and management of rewards and promotions.
