"Bitter Melon Thoran Bitter Melons are members of the family that are annual or perennial vines native to temperate and tropical areas and include cucumbers, gourds, melons, squashes, and pumpkins. It is widely cultivated and used in the cuisines of East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. The young shoots, roots, and leaves of the bitter melon may also be eaten as greens. Its juice is used in traditional medicine to treat intestinal parasites, mouth ulcers, as well as to increase breast milk. Bitter Melon (Pavakka) Thoran is an important and distinct dish integral to traditional Kerala cuisine."
