How does having a child with special needs affect a family? What responsibilities are needed by parents of a special needs child? For parents, having a disabled child may increase stress, take a toll on mental and physical health, make it difficult to find appropriate and affordable child care, and affect decisions about work, education or training, having additional children, and relying on public support. Your child may have a special need, but he or she also needs discipline in life. This means that they need to understand and respect the rules set by their parents or guardians. You might need to adjust a few of them along the way to help their learning process. Parents are their child’s best advocate. There is no one as interested in and motivated to see a child succeed and thrive than their own parents, and this alone places the parent in a crucial role on the IEP team. Keep careful records of your child’s education, including any testing and any IEP reports.
