Padayani, also known as Padeni, is a traditional folk dance and a ritual art from Kerala, India's central state. It is an ancient ceremony done in Bhagavati temples that involves a ceremonial dance using masks. The dance is performed in Bhadrakaali's honor. Padayani, which means 'row of warriors,' is an art style that incorporates music, dance, theater, satire, facial masks, and paintings. It is performed at temples dedicated to Bhadrakali from mid-December to mid-May as part of her worship. Padayani is unique to central Travancore, which includes the Kerala districts of Pathanamthitta and Kottayam. Padayani is thought to be a relic of the Dravidian forms of devotion that existed prior to the arrival of Islam.
പടേനി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പടയണി, ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മധ്യ സംസ്ഥാനമായ കേരളത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു പരമ്പരാഗത നാടോടി നൃത്തവും അനുഷ്ഠാന കലയുമാണ്. ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ മുഖാവരണം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ആചാരപരമായ നൃത്തം ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന ഒരു പുരാതന ചടങ്ങാണിത്. ഭദ്രകാളിയുടെ ബഹുമാനാർത്ഥം നൃത്തം ചെയ്യുന്നു. 'യോദ്ധാക്കളുടെ നിര' എന്നർത്ഥം വരുന്ന പടയണി, സംഗീതം, നൃത്തം, നാടകം, ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യം, മുഖംമൂടികൾ, പെയിന്റിംഗുകൾ എന്നിവ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന ഒരു കലാ ശൈലിയാണ്. ഭദ്രകാളിയുടെ ആരാധനയുടെ ഭാഗമായി ഡിസംബർ പകുതി മുതൽ മെയ് പകുതി വരെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയുള്ള ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ ഇത് നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. കേരളത്തിലെ പത്തനംതിട്ട, കോട്ടയം ജില്ലകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന മധ്യതിരുവിതാംകൂറിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ് പടയണി. പടയണി ഇസ്ലാമിന്റെ ആഗമനത്തിന് മുമ്പ് നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന ദ്രാവിഡ ഭക്തിയുടെ അവശിഷ്ടമാണെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.
