An operating system is a software programme required to manage and operate a computing device like smartphones, tablets, computers, supercomputers, web servers, cars, network towers, smartwatches etc. It is a layer of graphical user interface (GUI), which acts as a platform between the user and the computer hardware. An operating system performs all the basic tasks like managing files, processes and memory. Thus operating system acts as the manager of all the resources, i.e. resource manager. It is important software which runs on a computer and controls the set of instructions and wisely utilises each part of the computer. Thus, the operating system becomes an interface between user and machine. An operating system has three main functions: (1) manage the computer’s resources, such as the central processing unit, memory, disk drives and printers, (2) establish a user interface and (3) execute and provide services for applications software.
