The Operating System is the most important software that runs on a computer. It controls the memory and operations of the computer, as well as all of its software and hardware, allowing one to communicate with the computer without prior knowledge of its language. Computer operating systems can also be installed and loaded using an external hard drive, disc drive, or flash drive. An operating system's main functions are to manage the computer's resources, such as the central processing unit, memory, disc drives, and printers; to create a user interface; and to execute and provide services for applications (under software law).
