Onam is one of the most important festivals of Kerala. The people of Kerala celebrate Onam together, irrespective of their caste. This festival is associated with the story of Emperor Mahabali, a legendary character. It is believed that the Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, has trampled and lowered Mahabali to Earth. The King Mahabali visits Kerala on the day of Onam celebration. Onam is a public holiday in Kerala. Flowers and swings are one of the important ceremonies of Onam.
കേരളത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ആഘോഷങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഓണം. കേരളത്തിലെ ജനങ്ങൾ ജാതി ഭേദമന്യേ ഓണം ഒരുമിച്ച് ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. പുരാണത്തിലെ ഒരു കഥാപാത്രമായ മഹാബലി ചക്രവർത്തിയുടെ കഥയുമായി ഈ ആഘോഷം ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. മഹാവിഷ്ണു അവതാരമായ വാമനൻ ഭൂമിയിലേക്ക് ചവിട്ടി താഴ്ത്തിയ മഹാബലി കേരളം കാണാൻ ഓണത്തിന് എത്തും എന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. കേരളത്തിൽ ഓണം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ദിവസം പൊതു അവധി ആണ്. പൂക്കളവും ഊഞ്ഞാലും ആണ് ഓണത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ചടങ്ങുകളിൽ ഉള്ളത്.
