Nehemiah

Audio | English

The Book of Nehemiah was probably written, between 445 and 420 BC. The Book of Nehemiah, one of the historical books of the Bible, continues the story of Israel's return from the Babylonian enslavement and the reconstruction of the temple in Jerusalem. Nehemiah was a Hebrew in Persia when he learned that the Temple of Jerusalem was being rebuilt. He was worried about the absence of any walls to protect the city. He prayed fervently to God. God invited Nehemiah to use him to save Jerusalem. God responded to his prayer by sweetening the heart of the King, Artaxerxes, who gave not only his blessing, but also provisions for use in the project. He received permission from the king to go back to Jerusalem, where he was appointed as the governor. There was serious opposition from the other peoples of the earth and discontent within Jerusalem. In spite of this opposition, he reconstructed the walls within 52 days. Nehemiah also took steps to re-populate the city, cleanse the Jewish community, enforce debt, help Ezra spread the law of Moses, and enforce Jewish divorce from non-Jewish wives. After 12 years, ruled as governor, he returned to the king of Susa, who ruled with justice and fairness. After spending some time in Susa, he returned to Jerusalem, where the people had fallen into their evil ways. Non-Jews were allowed to trade in Jerusalem on the Sabbath and to keep rooms in the temple. In a fit of rage he cleansed the temple, the priests, and the Levites, and kept the law of Moses. The book of Nehemiah tells us how much you can achieve when you stick to God's will and plan.
